Stemming from the concept of traveling, “In Transit” captures commuters on the Mass Rapid Transport (MRT) trains in Singapore. Spending a long time on the train when I commute to school, the time on the train becomes an excuse for me to do nothing and be mindful of my surroundings. Time spent on the train traveling is when people are not particularly productive and it is during this liminal time where they take a breather from life. In a place which is so public, it is surprising to find that individuals carve out their own private space as they travel along their journeys. Commuters plug into their personal selection of music, engage in their own conversations, take trips to dreamlands… oblivious to the people around them. Or is it that they choose to avoid social interactions with strangers? Their unfocused gazes looking to the distance as they retreat into their own worlds.
